Internationally, in many countries costly investigations were conducted by Restrictive Practice Commissions and Competition Boards to reinstate Free Enterprise and to identify and abolish monopolies and cartels created by dental legislation that were not desirable or in the dental consumer’s interest.

Both the Consumer Council and Competition Board were instituted in South Africa to identify undesirable legislation and monopolies and to deregulate unnecessary restrictions that have developed over time and also to create healthy competition in the economic market of supply & demand that is to the advantage of consumers.
